[tæn'dʒɑːvʊə], Tanjore [tæn'dʒɔː], Stadt im Bundesstaat Tamil Nadu, Südindien, im Cauverydelta, 202 000 Einwohner; katholischer Bischofssitz; Universität (gegründet 1981), Kunstgalerie; Textil-, Nahrungsmittelindustrie; Kunsthandwerk (Teppiche, Seidenbrokate, Kupferarbeiten, Schmuckwaren).
 
 
Der shivaitische Brihadishvara-Tempel (um 1010 vollendet; UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe) ist einer der bedeutendsten Bauten dieser Dynastie. Über dem zweigeschossigen Vimana erhebt sich der 50 m hohe Turmaufbau, gekrönt von einem kuppelförmigen, etwa 80 t schweren Schlussstein; im Tempelinnern Reste von Wandmalereien. Ein Pavillon enthält die Steinplastik des Zebus Nandi, Symboltier des Gottes Shiva.
 
 
Thanjavur war südindische Residenz- und Tempelstadt, 907-1310 unter der Oberherrschaft der Coladynastie.
